Turkey is popular with UK holidaymakers again, according to the latest Thomas Cook Holiday Report*.
Turkey: popular with families again
The report claims that Turkey is outselling mainland Spain and the Canary Islands combined and that package holiday bookings to the country are currently up 84% year-on-year. This summer, 61% of package holiday bookings to Turkey are from families.
According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), the situation in Turkey has calmed following an attempted coup on 15 to 16 July 2016. But the security environment remains potentially volatile and a state of emergency is in place.
Remember that terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks. Most have taken place in the south and east of the country and in Ankara and Istanbul.
Be alert to your surroundings and remain vigilant in crowded places popular with foreign nationals, including during festival periods.
Be aware that there is a larger than usual number of police checkpoints on main roads across Turkey. Co-operate with officials conducting checks, and keep your passport and a printed copy of your e-visa with you at all times.
Remember that additional security measures may apply to flights from Turkey to the UK. For more information, read this guidance page.
Be aware that many parts of Turkey are subject to earthquakes. A 6.7 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Bodrum on 21 July 2017.
You can contact the emergency services in Turkey by calling 155 (police), 112 (ambulance) and 110 (fire).
